Yoga reduces menopause symptoms

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

Yoga reduces menopause symptoms by up to 59%

I’m always keen to do independent research to show the impact that yoga can have. So when I decided to run a yoga for menopause course I wanted to see what impact it had on individuals and their symptoms.

We carried out a five week YOGA FOR MENOPAUSE pilot with Progress Housing Group, asking participants to score 23 common menopause symptoms before and after the pilot.

We recorded the sessions so that participants could re-play sessions and practice at home. We measured the results for people who had done some of the planned lessons, all of the planned lessons and those who had carried out additional practice at home.

The results are detailed below:

Taking part in yoga for the menopause sessions over 5 weeks decreases the average response to a range of 23 symptoms by at least 25.27% and at most by 46.36%.

Some students did not participate in all of the five session however there was still an average decrease in symptoms by at least 14.39% and at most by 45.57%.

Where students participated in all 5 sessions there was a higher average decrease in symptoms by at least 27.20% and at most 55.81%.

However the biggest decrease in symptoms was where students practiced at home in addition to the weekly session i.e. they repeated the same sessions again. The average decrease in symptoms was at least 32.15% and at most 59.18%.

The results based on age under and over 50 are below:

AGE OVER 50:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 3.3009

The average response after the yoga sessions was 2.0044

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in symptoms was at least 24.68% and at most 53.87%

AGE BELOW 50:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 4.7826

The average response after the yoga sessions was 3.2298

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in symptoms was at least 17.94% and at most 46.99%

In terms of individual symptoms these are the ones where we had the most statistically significant results:

Segment - FEELING TENSE OR NERVOUS:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 5.2941

The average response after the yoga sessions was 3.4706

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in response was at least 0.16% and at most 68.73%

Segment - MEMORY PROBLEMS:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 6.8824

The average response after the yoga sessions was 4.7059

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in response was at least 8.23% and at most 55.02%

Segment - DIFFICULTY IN CONCENTRATING:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 6.0588

The average response after the yoga sessions was 3.5882

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in response was at least 14.88% and at most 66.67%

Segment - FEELING TIRED OR LACKING IN ENERGY:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 7.3529

The average response after the yoga sessions was 4.4118

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in response was at least 19.98% and at most 60.02%

Segment - LOSS OF INTEREST IN MOST THINGS:

The average response before the yoga sessions was 4.1765

The average response after the yoga sessions was 2.2353

This decrease was statistically significant.

The average decrease in response was at least 1.54% and at most 91.42%

These results are all statistically significant.

If you are interested in supporting your staff with yoga please get in touch, the pilot with Progress was delivered on-line which made it accessible to more of their employees, so location is not an issue.
